YAAAAAAY for new art supplies!!!!

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                                     April 26, 2018

Upcoming events:
Saturday, April 28, 12-4pm: The 4th Annual Invent Event is taking place at  Enos Garcia Gym.  This year's event has 30+ community partners lined up to share their creativity and skills with Taos kids, and there is no charge to attend. TISA will be there with stilts, so we can all stand tall! Children will get to make their own stilts out of recycled cans.
Families will be able to make, craft, build and play with all kinds of exciting technologies and tools, and it's a great way for parents and kids to get creative and have fun together. It also helps kids make connections between STEAM learning and career pathways right here in Taos. Hope to see you there!

April 26: Pizza day (the second one in April!) -- Thank you all for submitting your pizza orders in pouches/envelopes! It helps avoid any miscommunication.

April 27-28: Stables Student Art Show and pizza! Their theme was transportation this year. Check out our colorful hot air balloons!

April 30, 3pm: Student of the Month Celebration in the multi-purpose room. Congratulations to Khloe Martinez and Matthias Trujillo for their outstanding achievements in April. They have both exceeded their Istation reading goals!

May 4, 8:30-11:30 at TISA: Jodi Rhodus, ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) specialist will be holding a seminar on how to help children with behavior challenges. S
he will address behavior interventions at home, support services, structuring home life, the token system, and effective communication. Jodi will be moving to Colorado this summer. She is a highly skilled and respected expert in her field. This will be the last opportunity for TISA parents to glean invaluable information from Jodi.

Have a nice weekend!

Please take the survey linked below:
As part of the teacher evaluation process required by New Mexico Public Education, I ask that you compete the parent survey for me. Thank you for your support and providing feedback.  Here is the link:

This week we took a trip through the universe, thanks to the Santa Fe Children's Museum's outreach program and Megan's ingenuity! We also celebrated Earth Day. For the sake of the Earth we created biodegradable poetry on rice paper, decorated our room door advocating for keeping our oceans clean, and will be exhibiting our hot air balloons at the Stables Art Gallery with messages about minimizing our carbon footprints. We are weighing the trash we create each day and have pledged to reduce the number of paper towels we use in first grade. Part of our recycling efforts is to figure out how to pack an earth friendly lunch/snack for school. Please support your child with these endeavors at home.

Hoot 19

The end of the school year is fast approaching. We calculated that there are only 28 days of school left!
With spring fever on the horizon, please help us finish the year strong.
A few considerations:
If your child brings a behavior reflection sheet (called "Fix It!" sheet) home, please initiate a conversation about the behavior and send the sheet back with your signature along with the homework packet.
Homework is sent home weekly. Please help your child with it and return it on Thursday (along with any "Fix It!" sheets signed).
Toys should stay home. They have been getting in the way during learning time. (We plan on having a day to play with toys. I will let you know when that will be.)
Your child has an Istation (reading and math app) account that is available for them to use at home.
Thank you for your support!

Upcoming events:
April 18: This Wednesday from 9-3:30 a portable planetarium (star from the Santa Fe Children’s Museum) will be set up and ready for TISA classes at the El Camino Hotel conference room to come one at a time for their presentation. The exact time for each grade is still to be determined. I will keep you posted in case you’d like to join us.
April 19:  As part of our Earth Day activities we have a "pack an Earth Day" lunch challenge. Can you and your child team up to create a lunch that makes no trash by packing lunch in re-usable containers and/or a compostable wrap such as wax paper bags or cloth napkin or paper towel wrapping?
April 24: Pizza money due
April 26: Pizza day (the second one in April!)
April 30, 3pm: Student of the Month Celebration in the multi-purpose room. Congratulations to Khloe Martinez and Matthias Trujillo for their outstanding achievements in April. They have both exceeded their Istation reading goals!
May 16: YAY! Full day field trip to Ghost Ranch. Thank you all for your read-a-thon contributions to fund this fun, educational field trip.
Please note that the day will be extended to take advantage of the activities at Ghost Ranch.
drop off: I ask that children arrive early that day as we will be boarding the bus and leaving at 7:45.
pick up: 4pm (later than usual)
There will be a checklist of items to bring sent home as the field trip date approaches.
Please let me know if you are planning to chaperone or if you'd like to personally transport your child.

We had a great time in the Harwood Museum this week.
Learning about Erin Currier's creative process was timely, as we are also collecting found materials to be reused. Check out our amazing collaged self-portraits below!
