Hoot 4

Hello Sweet First Grade Families,

The children and I are excited to let you know about all the learning and activities planned for this month. September calendars went home in backpacks on Thursday with your child's art depicting the "Corn Moon." Homework packets and the weekly spelling quiz also went home on Thursday.

We are watching The Tale of Despereaux on Wednesday. Please let me know if you can lend us a DVD of the movie.

Please chat with your child about the calendar and the dates that are marked.

Here they are:
Sept 2: Tessa's birthday
Sept 6: full moon. We are studying the Moon in first grade. Challenge your child to spy for it in the sky daily.
Sept 13: Santi's birthday
Sept 13 (Wednesday): Despereaux party! We will be celebrating completing the first chapter book of the year in our read-aloud. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU COULD BRING IN dye-free natural POPSICLES (there are 16 kiddos in class) AND THE VIDEO "The Tale of Despereaux" that day (Wednesday).
Sept 19: Students of the Month Celebration
Sept 28: TISA Pirate Night (literacy games)

This week's literacy focus will be reviewing the short vowel sound "i" as in igloo. We have been practicing reading books that focus on the "a" (as in alligator) sound  using phonics readers. We will be starting with "i" books now.
In math, unit one focuses on counting using various tools and entry points. One easy, high-yield way to practice is to pick a random number for your child to count up from (e.g. count up 10 numbers from number 24 -- what number do you get to?) Counting to 100 is an essential skill that some children in first grade have yet to master. You may want to practice with concrete objects to count (marbles, pennies, etc.)

The homework packet is a remarkable tool to support your child with what he/she is learning at school. Please take the time to complete each assignment and reflect on the learning that happens with your child. Thank you!
